This course will prepare students for culturally responsive social work and addictions counseling practice relevant to diverse populations and historically marginalized groups. The course is designed to increase students’ awareness, knowledge, and contextual critical thinking skills to advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice. Students will learn to apply a historical and trauma-informed perspective with cultural groups and issues that are particularly salient or relevant to social work and counseling practice today. Students will gain insights into assessing the complex nature of person-in-environment, biopsychosocial factors, social oppression, and social functioning in individuals’ experiences. Strong emphasis on self-awareness of personal cultural values and beliefs to increase appreciation of multicultural identities.
